Third Class living quarters were snug and amenities few, but for most immigrant travelers they were an improvement over conditions at home. A family of eleven shared two of these rooms with no complaint.

Each of the 222 Third Class cabins were provided with heat, electrical lighting, fresh water basins and bunk beds with blankets and pillows, but no sheets or pillow cases.

Daily tub bathing was not a common practice among any of the passengers. They all used the fresh water basins in their compartments for daily sponge baths.

Most of the 700 Third Class passengers felt that frequent bathing was unhealthy. For that reason only two bathtubs were provided in steerage, one for men and one for women.
